SOIL

ongoing project about soil health

Soil is an irreplaceable resource that nurtures our plants and microorganisms and therefore all other life on land depends on it. The ecosystems rely on the health and richness of it. It is the foundation of our food system and helps to provide us with essential nutrients. Without soil, we would not have the crops to feed us – nor the materials to build our homes and communities. It is an important key to sustainability and life on Earth.

Healthy soil has the ability to hold more water and is therefore less susceptible to flooding and droughts.

This projects has two parts : Vivienne has received natural earth pigments that have been gathered from all over the world to create artwork that reflects the beauty and the incredible colour diversity of the world of soil.

Through this project Vivienne explores the metaphorical possibilities of soil and its connections to life.

Her process also investigates how climate change is altering the colours of the Earth – our soil and plants. She receives currently information and advice from a soil specialists.

In the second part of the project, Vivienne works with the concept of healthy soil. This revolves around mud and clay and the symbol of the sphere that connects her to the earth on a deeper level.

Shaping these materials is more than an artistic output — it is a journey influenced by her fascination with the interconnectedness of nature, matter and form. Each sphere she creates reflects her admiration for the Japanese art of Hikaru Dorodango. Vivienne finds beauty in the patience and delicacy required to shape these mud balls. Crafting them is a slow, meditative process, mirroring the natural unfolding of our world.
